2001 Men's Team

2001 Men's Team

In the summer of 2000 Fairfield Red Ruggers gave a preview of what their upcoming seasons would look like by successfully competing in and winning both the Montauk Sevens and Sea Girt (New Jersey) 15s tournaments. Under the leadership of captains John Doros and Joe Frazzitta, the Red Ruggers kept their momentum with early season victories over Boston College, Yale, Central Connecticut and Southern Connecticut. In those four matches Red Ruggers scored 130 points. Matt Brooklier, Mike Lee and Russ De Lacey provided back line firepower. Only a close loss to UConn by a score of 24-26 prevented the Stags from earning an undefeated fall season.

The spring of 2001 was equally successful for the Red Ruggers. Led by forwards Adam Lynch, the club president, plus Ryan O'Rourke, BJ Galvin and Chris Cooper, the Red Ruggers rolled through an undefeated spring season. The highlight of that season was a successful tour of the Bahamas where the FURFC's rugby skills impressed the native teams as did their ability to socialize after the matches.

The 2001 Doug Ciacci Most Valuable Player award was earned by Rob Sacramento and Matt Brooklier won the Hans Grauert Service Award. The team is remembered by all who knew them as one of the most successful teams on the pitch and afterwards in the first 50 years of Fairfield rugby.
